The project

Problem and objectives

ALTHEA is a European innovation project that aims to accelerate the transition of peri-urban areas towards climate neutrality. The project is based on the creation of “Transition Super Living Labs” (TSLLs), territories regarded as dynamic environments for experimenting with systemic change. Five TSLLs are involved (Antwerp-Rotterdam, the Milan metropolitan area, the Alicante-Elche area, the Epirus-Ioannina region and the Lisbon metropolitan area), together with three “replicator” sites (Copenhagen, Gdynia and Aachen). ALTHEA develops and implements 59 targeted interventions along four innovation axes: sustainable mobility, decarbonised energy systems, zero-pollution industry and cross-sector governance. The project develops 21 data-driven innovations that make up the ALTHEA Innovations Toolkit, a suite designed to optimise transport networks, decarbonise energy grids, improve governance structures and strengthen industrial sustainability, positioning peri-urban areas as key drivers of Europe's climate-neutral future.

The role of FIT Innovation

WP4 leader · Evaluation framework and impact assessment

FIT Innovation takes part in ALTHEA as a partner with expertise in transport and logistics, bringing strategic skills to the evaluation and implementation of innovative solutions. FIT INNOVATION leads Work Package 4 (TSLL Evaluation Framework and Impact Assessment) and is responsible for developing a consolidated evaluation framework based on the principles of Climate City Contracts. It also monitors the progress of the TSLLs and produces strategic recommendations for policy and business models. In the Milan metropolitan area TSLL, FIT works with Regione Lombardia (the project coordinator) and other partners to turn initiatives into concrete action plans. FIT INNOVATION also contributes to the development of integrated business cases for peri-urban areas, translating evaluation insights into operational and financially sustainable strategies for the transition to climate neutrality.
